Policies
Photo, Voice, and Media
An online school sees and hears children through a screen. This policy says exactly who can see or hear your child, what is recorded, how long it is kept, and what we will never publish.
Draft for attorney review; effective when enrollment opens.
Cameras in live classes
- From grade 5, no student is ever required to show their face in a mixed class.
- Attendance and participation are never measured by camera.
- In grades 1 to 4, cameras on help the teacher, with a learning coach nearby; if your family prefers otherwise, tell the teacher.
- Parents and learning coaches sitting with a child may be seen by other families in that class.
Recordings of sessions
- Every session with a single student is recorded, as a safeguarding measure, including a group session whose roster is down to one student. Other group sessions are not routinely recorded.
- Recordings are staff-only safeguarding records. They are never shown to students or other families and never published.
- Recordings are deleted 30 days after the session by our nightly deletion job, unless a legal hold keeps one or a safeguarding concern does (one about the child or the session's adults that is open, or that was raised while the recording existed and is still kept).
- Recordings are never kept in our recovery archive (where other deleted records wait 90 days before they are erased): a recording is erased for good on its date.
- Families may not download recordings. A family's request to see a recording is handled by our staff, because each recording may show other children.
- If a student misses a class, the teacher may record a separate lesson with no students in it.
- Every AI feature of our video provider (transcripts, captions, summaries, and assistants) must be turned off and locked, so no child's voice is sent to an AI service.
Recitation recordings
- Students may record a Qur'an recitation and send it to their teacher, only with your separate consent.
- Only the teacher, our Qur'an lead, and your family can hear it.
- The teacher marks it by hand, word by word. No software scores it.
- It is deleted 60 days after it is marked, for good: recordings are never kept in our recovery archive.
- We create no voiceprint or other biometric identifier from any recording.
Photos and profile pictures
- Students cannot upload profile photos. Other students see initials.
- Schoolwork that includes a photo (for example, a science project) is seen only by the teacher and your family, unless you agree otherwise.
- Staff never photograph or screenshot a child.
What we publish
- We never publish a photo, video, voice recording, or full name of a child without your separate written consent, given for that specific use, which you may withdraw at any time.
- We publish no testimonials until real families choose to share them.
- Pictures of our software on our website come from a demo school, and every name in them is fictional.
Recording by families
Students and families may not record, photograph, or screenshot live classes, classmates, or teachers, or share class content on social media. Breaking this rule is serious because it exposes other people's children. See our Acceptable Use Policy.
Our media standards
- No depiction of any prophet, of the family of the Prophet ﷺ, or of the Companions, in any form, including AI images.
- No figurative images of angels.
- In Islamic studies and Qur'an materials for younger children, people are shown without faces.
- No instrumental music in any lesson, video, advertisement, or sound in our software. Voice-only nasheed and Qur'an recitation are welcome.
- Printed pages that contain ayat carry a note asking that they be handled and disposed of respectfully.
Your consents
Recording consents (for recitations) and media consents (for anything published) are separate from enrollment and separate from each other. You can see and change them in the Family Portal at any time. Withdrawing a consent stops new recordings or publication at once; we then delete what we hold under that consent, except anything we must keep for a safeguarding matter.
