What you need
Setting up for school at home
You do not need special equipment. You need a reliable computer, a headset, a steady internet connection, a quiet place to learn, and a printed Qur'an or qaida. Here is the detail.
A computer
A laptop or desktop computer, Windows, Mac, or Chromebook, with an up-to-date web browser such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari. A tablet is fine for reading a lesson, but a keyboard makes writing and live classes much easier.
Each child in a live class at the same time needs their own device.
A camera
The camera built into most laptops is enough. From grade 5, no student is ever required to show their face in a mixed class, and attendance is never measured by camera. Our camera rules.
A headset with a microphone
A simple wired headset or earbuds with a microphone keeps the class clear for everyone and keeps your home quieter. Qur'an teachers need to hear your child's recitation clearly.
A steady internet connection
Home internet that handles a video call without freezing. As a rule of thumb, allow about 10 megabits per second down and 3 up for each child in a live class at the same time. Wired or close to the router is best.
A quiet place to learn
A table in a shared room, where an adult can see and hear the class, is better than a closed bedroom. Keep a plain background behind your child.
A printed Qur'an or qaida
Beginners need a printed qaida. Readers need a printed mushaf in the script your family uses (Madinah or Indo-Pak), so Qur'an practice happens off the screen.
Also useful
- Notebooks, pencils, and a folder for each subject.
- A printer helps with worksheets, but it is not required.
- For grades 1 and 2: a learning coach (you, or another adult you choose) for part of every school day.
We will publish the book and materials list for each grade before enrollment opens, and say which items the school provides.
What you will not need
- No outside apps or accounts. Teachers never ask your child to sign up for another website or service.
- No special software. Everything runs in the web browser.
- No email address for children under 13. They get a school username, and you reset their password from your Family Portal.
If something makes this hard
If your family shares one computer, has a slow connection, or needs a different setup for a disability, tell us before enrollment. We will work out a plan with you, and accommodations are part of that.
