Level 6: After the Abbasids: The Rise of Regional Islamic Empires

Level 6 of the Islamic History Curriculum explores The Post-Abbasid Period & The Rise of Regional Islamic Empires. This era marks a shift from a centralized caliphate to multiple regional powers, with various Islamic dynasties emerging across Africa, Asia, and Europe. These dynasties contributed to the expansion of Islam, the development of trade networks, and the flourishing of culture and science.

Students will gain insight into the key political, economic, and cultural transformations that shaped the Islamic world after the decline of the Abbasids, leading to the rise of powerful Islamic empires such as the Ottomans, Safavids, and Mughals.

What students will learn

  • Understand the fragmentation of the Islamic world after the fall of the Abbasids.
  • Analyze the political and military strategies of various post-Abbasid Islamic empires.
  • Explore the economic, scientific, and cultural contributions of regional Islamic dynasties.
  • Examine the expansion of Islam into new regions and the role of trade in its spread.
  • Assess the interactions between Islamic and non-Islamic civilizations during this period.
