Level 5 of the Islamic History Curriculum explores The Abbasid Caliphate & The Islamic Golden Age. This period marks one of the most influential eras in Islamic history, characterized by intellectual, scientific, and cultural advancements, as well as significant political shifts. The Abbasids established Baghdad as the intellectual capital of the world, overseeing a flourishing period of knowledge, arts, and governance.

Students will gain insight into the formation of the Abbasid Caliphate, its governance systems, contributions to world civilization, and the eventual decline of its power. This level will conclude with the Mongol invasion of Baghdad in 1258 and the transition of Islamic leadership to new emerging powers.

What students will learn

  • Understand the establishment and governance of the Abbasid Caliphate.
  • Analyze the political and economic systems that enabled the Abbasid Golden Age.
  • Explore the major scientific, intellectual, and artistic achievements of the era.
  • Examine the interactions between Muslim and non-Muslim scholars during this period.
  • Assess the factors that led to the decline of Abbasid rule and its impact on the Muslim world.
