Level 3 of the Islamic History Curriculum explores The Rightly Guided Caliphs & Expansion of Islam. This period marks the golden era of leadership after the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, focusing on the governance of Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali (RA). We will examine how they upheld justice, expanded the Muslim world, and dealt with internal and external challenges.
Students will gain insight into the political, social, and economic developments during the Rashidun Caliphate, including the codification of the Qur’an, military conquests, governance reforms, and the eventual emergence of sectarian divides. This level will conclude with the martyrdom of Ali (RA) and the transition to the Umayyad Caliphate.
What students will learn
- Understand the leadership styles and contributions of the Rightly Guided Caliphs.
- Examine the expansion of the Muslim world under each caliph.
- Analyze the governance and legal reforms introduced during this period.
- Explore the challenges faced by the early Muslim state, including civil conflicts.
- Assess the transition from the Rashidun to the Umayyad Caliphate.
