π Types of Accreditation (U.S.-based)
There are two general types of accreditation:
- Regional Accreditation (most respected, e.g., Cognia, WASC, NEASC)
- National Accreditation (e.g., Middle States Association, NCPSA for private/faith-based)
For an online private school, your best first step may be:
- Cognia (formerly AdvancED) β well-known and accepts private schools
- MSA-CESS β Middle States Association for international and U.S. schools
- NIPSA or NCPSA β for Islamic or faith-based schools starting smaller
You do not need to be accredited before starting your school β many agencies offer a candidacy phase to help you grow into it.
β General Requirements You’ll Need to Prepare
To apply for candidacy or full accreditation:
- Legal status as an education entity (LLC, nonprofit, or private school registration)
- School leadership with education credentials or experience
- Full curriculum documentation (we’re building this!)
- Internal policies: student handbook, discipline, academic standards
- Operating for at least 1 year, or completing a candidacy period
- A functioning LMS (ours is
learn.southernislamicinstitute.org
) β - Assessment strategy (tests, evaluations, progress tracking)
- Plan for ongoing improvement (e.g., tracking data, surveys)
